In a globalizing world, more and more people have family far away. And even those who don’t often move too far to visit regularly. Airline travel has become a normal part of life for millions of people. But airline travel also comes at a cost:As the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics shows, emissions from airline travel at universities alone are substantial.

The climate crisis forces us to make hard choices. People should consider traveling locally as often as they can. Carpooling, walking, biking, and using public transportation.

Instead of flying consider videoconferencing. Or at least reducing the frequency of flights.

If flights cannot be avoided consider reducing frequency. Pay a carbon offset for every flight. The NRDC has some good recommendations regarding carbon offsets.

Encourage others to do the same.
